Once upon a time provisioning calories was actually difficult. It took all the effort of a reasonably competent man just to keep a small family from starving. A highly competent man could provide for a large family but it still took a lot of effort and there was no sick leave. When dealing with humans it's often useful to remember that much of our behaviour is the result of darwinian selection in a calorie poor environment. We choose the best tasting foods with the lowest calories. Our ancestors would view that the way we view gold sheets in food now. They considered the taste content of their food about as much as we consider the gold content of ours.

The sexes differ hugely in their strategy for acquiring calories. Men max out on usefulness and teamwork while women max out on likability. That's why they are so damn pretty.
