Any system exposed to a large number of people will eventually be corrupted if it's possible to do so. In person voting with an ID check has been the gold standard for democracies but it's currently showing signs of corruption. Elon thinks the solution is to go back to basics and he is probably right enough. Though for once I think there is a chance he might be wrong. Traditional voting systems are completly opaque to the public. We have no way of verifying that the results are real. We can't even verify that our own vote was recorded correctly. Elon's solution merely makes corruption harder. I'd like to know for sure that my vote was counted correctly and that no fake votes were recorded. I'd also like to see the cost of voting go down so that we can vote on more things. I might have a solution:
A solution might be a kind two tier system. Tier one you just log into a website and vote. Your vote is linked to a unique ID and put in a public database. It isn't actually counted though. In order to be counted you need to have you genes sequenced and post the hash of the result. Using a hash here so people don't have to tell the world what their genes are. This costs around $200 currently. So it's affordable enough and provides utility beyond voting. The reason this is required for votes to actually count is that it enables challenges to be submitted. Anyone willing to put some money dowm can create a public challenge by putting a gene hash on the challenge blockchain. The challengee will then be sent a swab to be tested by a random testing provider. The tester will then post their gene hash next the hash of the challengee to clear the challenge. This challenge process is obviously somewhat expensive but since a very small amount of randomly chosen challenges will be sufficient to prove that the fraud rate is low enough to not of affected the result of the vote then it will be well within the reach of any middle class person to pay for. And since all challenges are publicly made it's unlikely any person would ever feel the need to create any challenges of their own.
The tier one voters will probably be happy to remain tier one so long as the results of the tier two votes line up with the results of the tier one votes. So most people will be able to vote with minimal investment or even login security for their whole life. Sure technically their votes would never be counted but the ability to make their vote count any time they wish.
Other digital voting solutions exist but I'm too stupid to understand them.
