We are about to crack AI and robotics. These things will obviously make us stupidly wealthy, and if you think about it money will become meaningless since the only thing you would ever use it for is to buy electricity to run your AI and your robot army. And if the only thing anyone ever spends money on is electricity then money becomes pointless and we will just drop it and trade electricity directly.
But what else will change? Well first of all I'm going to focus on the top 5% of people since the other 95% are not going to know what to do and will probably end up a bit like Europe is today. They will find a reasonably fulfilling way of life and just put it on repeat. And they will become as relevant to the world as Europe is today. Mostly they will become a theme park the top 5% goes to visit when they feel like taking a break. I suspect it will be a sports crazy world since sports provide the social structure that brings people together while enabling them to sort into the pecking order that women need to be able to choose their mates.
The top 5% are natural leaders and will thrive in the new environment of extreme abundance. They will be able to vibe code the world, each having an army of hard working labourers and superhuman geniuses eager to take commands. It will be like having Aladdin's tea pot but Aladdin doesn't stop at 3 wishes any more. And when you get tired of making wishes Aladdin will suggest one for you.
These top 5% will essentially become ungovernable in sense that no government would have anything to offer. They won't require protection or contract enforcement1. Governments can try and stop a 5%er from doing something and if the other 5%ers don't like what they were doing then the government2 might be powerful enough to enforce their decree. But most likely the 5% will have some friends and together they will easily overpower any bureaucracy. Therefore, any project that holds the moral imperative will be able to go ahead without permission from the bureaucrats. Such projects will include new cities in the desert3. Tunnels and high speed transport connecting all cities including existing ones. Floating cities on the ocean that expand the available land near popular cities. All these projects are within reach today but aren't even seriously attempted because of all the petty bureaucrats that would fight it without even understanding what they are fighting for. In the future the top 5% will have fuck you Joules (money) and will collectively impose beneficial projects upon the world with absolutely nothing the 95%ers can do to stop it. Out of respect for the 95% the 5%ers will probably be conservative with the projects they choose. The really interesting projects will all happen off planet where the 95% will rarely venture and will never feel at home in. They will travel off planet the way europeans travel to America. Sparingly and ironically. When they return to earth they will speak only of the bad things they saw.
Some of the top 5% will try to become powerful warlords/con-artists but in the world of radical transparency that emerges from cheap sensors (which we have) and cheap intelligence (which we are about to have) it will be obvious that they are behaving badly and therefore can easily be marked out for their actions and then be ganged up on by the other powerful players.
Governments are inherently full of bureaucrats since group decision making for non digital beings is so inefficient that the 5%ers stay well away. And the 5% of the future won't form governments of their own because they will be unnecessary. Therefore, the governments of the future will be as incompetent as they are today.
Former desert. In the future no land will be baron unless by choice.
